The Detroit Red Wings are not wasting time welcoming Steve Yzerman into their ranks.

A few days after the Tampa Bay Lightning, where Yzerman was general manager, had been eliminated from the playoffs, the Wings called a press conference for this afternoon.

The announcement was announced in a tweet: There are signs that Yzerman has been appointed Managing Director and that Holland is taking an advisory role.

Holland still has one year of contract as Wings General Manager. He told the Free Press earlier this week that he was traveling to Sweden this weekend to explore the IIHF World Under-18 Championship.

Yzerman played for the Wings from 1983 to 2006, winning three Stanley Cups as captain. After taking a few months to retire, he held the position of deputy in the Netherlands, until he accepted the position of general manager in Tampa Bay in 2010. He then played two essential pieces in Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman and formed a competitive team, although the Lightning also missed the playoffs three times between 2010-1018.

At the start of the 2018-2019 season, Yzerman cited family reasons for his decision to retire and serve his contract as an advisor. The 2018-1919 Lightning matched Yzerman's 1995-1996 Wings with 62 regular season wins, but was swept in the first round of a series that ended Tuesday.
