Apple announced the new App Store Small Business program last year, which allows small developers to pay Apple a reduced commission for sales made through the App Store. However, developer Sean harding shared his story on Twitter about how he became ineligible for this program, even though he is a small independent developer.
Apple has traditionally charged a 30% fee on every sale made through the App Store, whether it’s an app or an in-app purchase. After several complaints, the company announced that developers who had earned up to $ 1 million in the previous year could ask a program to reduce that rate to 15%.
Harding, who has been developing iOS apps independently for some time, decided last year to “take their apps more seriously”. He formed a small private company (LLC) and created a new business account on Apple Developer, when he requested to migrate his applications to this account.
However, fearing that he would have difficulty joining the App Store Small Business program, he contacted Apple support for further clarification. Apple did not answer his questions correctly.
So I did what I thought was the right thing. I emailed Apple and asked for clarification. If transferring the app made me ineligible for the Small Business program, it wasn’t worth it. The first answer I received did not answer the correct question. So I wrote again.
The second answer also did not answer the correct question. So I wrote again. The third response read, “Since you have not yet registered for the Small Business Program, you can transfer the application and then submit your registration.”
In the same email, Apple also said the company would not be able to guarantee its eligibility for the program after the apps were transferred, which seemed ambiguous to Harding.
Rather than asking for clarification a fourth time, I interpreted it to mean “a transfer will not disqualify you, but we will not guarantee acceptance of anyone.” So I made the transfer, applied for the Small Business Program, and waited.
Unfortunately, after the transfer was complete, Apple rejected Harding’s apps for the App Store Small Business program on the grounds that because its apps moved from one account to another, they were no longer eligible for the reduced fee. Apple later told the developer that any apps transferred after January 1, 2021 were not eligible for the program, which the company had not clarified to Harding before.
Although Harding is aware that he made a mistake in requesting the transfer of apps from one account to another when he was unsure of the outcome, he argues that Apple did not provide an update. clear answer and also did not rethink his situation.
