Devin White: It was the Chiefs’ fault for not helping their tackles

The Super Bowl continues to create a flow of commentary and analysis, much of which comes from those involved in the affair.

Buccaneers linebacker Devin White, the player I would have voted MVP for, has appeared on FS1 Undisputed to discuss the game. Shannon Sharpe asked White if he was surprised at the Chiefs’ failure to provide additional help to their offensive line.

“We knew they were going to be an arrogant team, which they have every right to be,” White said. “It was the No. 1 offense in the entire National Football League. But the point is, we knew they couldn’t block us. We knew our top four were going to dominate them. So they did us a favor. They played in our hands.

“We weren’t going to be that arrogant team like, ‘Hey, we’re gonna play them in Cover One, we’re gonna shut them down.’ Our best guys teamed up with their best guys. We were going to make it a team, a collective victory in defense, and that’s what we did, man. So at the end of the day, they shouldn’t even be talking about not having their offensive tackles when they haven’t even helped them. They put them alone on islands with the best passing throwers in the game. So it’s their fault.

It was indeed the case. The Chiefs only used five blockers 92 percent of the time. The Chiefs relied on quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ ability to flee pressure – and he ultimately ran 497 yards before throwing the ball or being touched.

While having Mahomes will always make the Chiefs relevant, they have work to do to stay ahead of defenses looking to defend the best offense in the game.
