Cubs utility Ben Zobrist has been re-added to the shortlist and added to the lists of 25 and 40 men, according to a tweet from Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic (link). To make room on the active lineup of 25 players, versatile player David Bote was opted for Triple-A Iowa; outfielder Mark Zagunis was designated to assign a space for Zobrist on the 40 men. A similar report Jordan Bastian of MLB.com has since been retweeted by the club itself, essentially including what happens for an official announcement in 2019.

Although Zobrist and Bote are certainly the most famous names involved in this transaction, the Zagunis DFA is worth noting, as the Cubs' long-time farmer offers a lot of control and a relatively satisfactory record in the minor leagues. The 26-year-old has only recorded 55 victories in the big leagues since his debut in 2017, but his minor league stats report a batterer whose production has always been adjusted to the average or better. With Triple-A Iowa this year, the Zagunis managed a slash of .294 / .361 / .475 at its fourth top-level performance of the miners; Last year, its .272 / .395 / .375 production in 453 AB of Iowa was even better under weighted measures (111 wRC +). It will be interesting to see if a non-candidate takes it on his mind in the hope that he turns out to be a late defender of the major leagues.

Zobrist has been out of action since May when he deals with the ramifications of a divorce. He had not made a particularly hot start in 2019, his .241 / .343 / .253 slash was well below what the fans were expecting more and more from the multi-talented greybeard. At 38, Zobrist is playing in the final year of a four-year / $ 56 million contract signed with Chicago before 2016.

This is the second time that Bote is optional this month. Despite a .262 / .359 / .435 (106 wRC +) profile this year, the 26-year-old has nevertheless worn one for the team in recent weeks. Steve Cishek saw him at Triple-A Iowa on August 19th, to be recalled on August 25th while Anthony Rizzo started to suffer. With this option, the great second division player will have to stay in Triple-A for at least ten days.
