DHS filed a notice Thursday extending the GST designations for the four countries until January 2, 2020 and the notice will be officially published in the Federal Register on Friday.
Under the GST, citizens of certain countries that have suffered a natural or man-made disaster are allowed to live and work in the United States while their home country is recovering.
In some cases, GST holders have been in the United States for more than two decades, with a more or less automatic renewal of their status every 18 months.
The Trump administration has sought to reduce TPS's size by suspending renewals of country designations, forcing recipients to regain a new immigration status or leave the country.
In October, a California judge barred the administration from ending TPS for Sudan, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Haiti, alongside the plaintiffs who claimed that the decision was motivated by a predetermined political agenda.
The announcement made this week by the DHS is part of the administration's efforts to comply with this decision.
"This extension gives space to breathe some of us, but thousands of GST holders who are not involved in this lawsuit are still in limbo without any judicial protection," he said. said Hiwaida Elarabi, a complainant and GST holder in Sudan, in a statement.
The decision concerns approximately 240,000 GST holders; a separate court proceeding has blocked Trump administration orders to withdraw about 57,000 beneficiaries from the Honduran and 9,000 Nepalese TPS.
TPS failed to get as much congressional support as the DACA (Deferred Action for Child Arrivals) program, which protects immigrants without legal status who have arrived in the United States as minors .
But support for GST holders, especially long-time residents in the United States, became more visible as the program was targeted by the Trump administration.
According to the call for nominations, TPS will be part of a new version of the DREAM Act Act that will be unveiled by House Democrats next month.
The DREAM Act, including the addition of the GST, should be welcomed by the Democrats in Congress.
Although a small group of Republicans are strong supporters of GST, this number was reduced last year due to retirements and mid-term election losses.
