Tharsis is a turn-based spaceship management game where your ability to deal with a Sandra Bullock of disasters is determined by a dice roll. Alec has already sung his praises by calling it “cruel as hell” – and it’s one of the free games this week on the Epic Games Store.
The central dilemma at the heart of Tharsis is what your crew has to do at any given time. Should you send someone to repair the life support or power module? The decision is up to you, but the outcome depends on the roll of the dice.
“So why even embark on such a dark journey?” Alec asked in his review of Tharsis. “Well, because small wins seem so triumphant. Because keeping control, even for a short time, makes you feel like some kind of strategic genius. Every now and then one or two of your crew might survive the ten rounds. And if they do, you’ll be rewarded with new crew members for the next time, or you’ll feel ready to take on the most difficult difficulty, even if more difficult than it seems impossible. ”
It also has some really nice dice, which bounce and flip on their edge and create drama all on their own.
So yes, Tharsis for free. A good deal. You can pick it up from the Epic Games Store until September 23 at 4 p.m. and keep it forever.
Epic is also offering Speed Brawl for free, a 2018 2D brawler about maintaining your momentum as you run around the screen to strike out monsters. I didn’t know him before, but the art is cool.
