SAN FRANCISCO – Dick Tidrow, a former Yankees pitcher and longtime San Francisco Giants front office member, has died. He was 74 years old.
The Giants announced his death on Wednesday on behalf of the Tidrow family. He died unexpectedly on Saturday in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
“Our entire organization is heartbroken by the news of Dick’s passing,” said Giants president and CEO Larry Baer. “Much of our success over the past three decades is directly linked to Dick’s contributions. He will be truly missed by all of us and our hearts go out to Mari Jo and his entire family during this difficult time. “
Tidrow has kicked off games for 13 major league seasons for the Indians, Yankees, Cubs, White Sox and Mets. The 6-foot-4 right-hander had a career record of 100-94 with a 3.68 ERA in 620 appearances with 138 starts.
Tidrow was most recently the Giants’ senior advisor to the president of baseball operations. He spent 28 seasons in half a dozen roles with the Giants after joining the franchise before the 1994 season as a major league scout.
The former pitcher’s advice has been crucial during the Giants’ three 2010 World Series championship seasons, ’12 and ’14. The 2010 Championship was the franchise’s first since moving to the West in 1958.
“Dick was a unique and special person whose influence and impact has been legendary throughout the game and whose fingerprints are all over our three World Series trophies,” said Brian Sabean, Giants; executive vice-president and senior advisor. “On a personal level, we have shared incredible ups and downs together and I will be forever grateful for her 40 years of friendship and support. “
Before returning to his hometown of San Francisco, Tidrow worked as a special mission scout for the Yankees from 1985 to 1993.

Tidrow was born on May 14, 1947 in San Francisco. A former Marine, he attended High School and College in Hayward, a suburb of East Bay, and graduated from Mount Eden High in 1965 and Chabot Junior College two years later.
He is survived by his wife, Mari Jo, three children – Andy, Matt and Richelle – and a grandchild, Trista.
“Dick was truly one of a kind. He is loved and missed beyond measure and irreplaceable in our hearts and our lives, ”said Mari Jo Tidrow.
