Hays told lottery officials that she was shopping in Burlington, Iowa, when she decided to buy two tickets for the Powerball. The schoolteacher said she had won $ 12 on the first ticket when she had tied the Powerball and $ 2 million on her second play ticket, but that she had missed the Powerball, according to a press release posted on the Powerball website.

"If I do it right, it should prepare me for the rest of my life," Hays told the lottery officials when she claimed her prize.

Hays, 49, bought the Powerball ticket at the Hy-Vee convenience store. She admitted to having talked to most of her colleagues about getting the Jackpot Prize before going to claim it.

"Everyone at work knows it!" she told the lottery officials. "And car dealerships know since I was looking for a car."

Hy-Vee will receive a $ 2,000 bonus from the Iowa lottery for selling the $ 1 million winning ticket in one of its stores.

In other lottery news, a former New Jersey park warden, who had been laid off during the recent government shutdown, claimed her $ 1 million prize after winning the lottery. Judith Smith of Bayonne, New Jersey, won the $ 29.5 million Pick-6 jackpot prize on December 18, according to the New Jersey Lottery.

Smith told lottery officials that she bought the ticket at Eddy's Wine & Liquors on December 17, a few days before leaving Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York.
