A viral TikTok video appears to explain why Hailey Bieber abruptly put on sunglasses on the red carpet at the Met Gala. In the short clip, which amassed over 1.5 million views in just 18 hours after its publication, a crowd can be heard repeatedly shouting “Selena, Selena, Selena” as the 24-year-old model and her husband Justin Bieber pose for photographers at the September 13 event. The singing, in reference to Justin’s famous ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, reportedly made Hailey cry and ask her team for sunglasses to cover her eyes.
Amid the commotion, Justin appears to be saying “don’t cry, don’t cry” in an apparent attempt to console his wife. Her affectionate demeanor in the TikTok video matches some of the couple’s professional photos uploaded to sites like Getty Images (like the photo above).
The Met Gala coincided with the Bieber’s third anniversary of their courthouse wedding, which would make the “Selena” chant all the more touching if it were true. Another video, taken from a different perspective of the couple, features the same vocals and more commentary from Gomez fans.
Gomez and Bieber, 27, dated from late 2010 to early 2018.
Billie Eilish’s heartbreaking song “Happier Than Ever” made the soundtrack to the viral video posted by TikTok user @returnofbizzle, adding another layer of emotion to the clip.

Hailey, who wore a black strapless Saint Laurent sheath dress with an embellished plunging neckline alongside a costumed Bieber, was seen smiling at her as they arrived for the annual charity event before looking visibly shaken after the apparent song.
Hailey then put on the sunglasses.
And the couple continued to pose for photos.
The Biebers were in high spirits when Keke Palmer interviewed them for Vogue although.
