Lopez returned to his first major film role in March on the anniversary of Quintillana-Perez’s death. She posted a video that was a mix of clips from Quintillana-Perez and her movie together on Instagram. The caption read:

Selena was such an inspiration to me and I was lucky enough to be chosen to play her. As an artist, this film was truly an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Lopez starred in Selena in 1997, two years after his death. There was controversy at the time as the actor is Puerto Rican playing the Queen of Tejano.

The film followed the singer’s personal life. But there are many scenes recreating his performances on stage.

Although Lopez continued to have her own singing career, she did not sing through the performances. According to Entertainment Weekly, she lip-synced to the songs of the real singer in the film.

However, Lopez was able to use his real voice for the first three words of the performance of “Como la Flor”. It makes sense considering that the music in the movie would make it or break it. The actor will not release his first single, “If You Had My Love” until 1999.

Lopez had to work to get the right dialect for the role. She also studied her performances to recreate them in the film. “He’s someone who’s fresh on the public mind,” Lopez said. “So you have to do your homework on this gig.”

The story of the icon is told again in a Netflix series called, Selena: the series. This time around, Christian Serratos will take on the role, and it looks like Lopez is looking forward to it.

“Guys, I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this new Selena series on Netflix,” Lopez said in a video shared by Netflix. “Playing Selena was kind of a defining moment in my career and I was so excited when I saw the trailer and heard about it.

She continued, “It’s a great way for this generation to get to know Selena. I love Selena. It’s a big part of my life and my career. And I can’t wait to see it. It’s on Netflix. December 4. It is currently not known whether Serratos will sing for the role.
