Digitimes: AirPods 3 to launch alongside iPhone 13 in September

The long-awaited successor to Apple’s popular AirPods headphones has been rumored and leaked in many forms at this point, but customers are still waiting for it to actually be released. A Digitimes supply chain report says production is increasing and the new headphones are expected to arrive alongside the iPhone 13 launch in the fall.

Although last year the iPhone 12 series was only unveiled in October due to pandemic delays, the general expectation is that this year Apple will return to its usual September schedule for the announcement of the iPhone 13.

Digitimes says flexible circuit board shipments have started for next-generation AirPods models, with sources saying the new AirPods have a “good chance” of making their debut at the September Apple event, alongside the new iPhones.

The AirPods 3 will share design cues with their AirPods Pro siblings, with shorter stems. They should include support for Apple’s Spatial Audio feature, which is available when watching TV shows and movies, and (with the arrival of iOS 15) Dolby Atmos music as well. The price should be about the same as the current AirPods, in the $ 150 range.

The iPhone 13 line will be available in the same four screen sizes as the iPhone 12 with similar frame designs. However, the size of the Face ID notch will be reduced and the rear camera module will be enlarged to support new, better quality lenses. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are believed to feature 120Hz high refresh rate screens for the first time, and possibly an always-on lock screen feature.

As previously reported by Bloomberg, an update to the AirPods Pro line is not expected until next year.
