Director John Singleton is in a coma after suffering a stroke, according to court documents

The director of "Boyz n the Hood", John Singleton, is in a coma after suffering a stroke last week, said his mother in a document filed Thursday.

Singleton, 51, suffered a stroke on April 17, said his family.

Singleton's mother, Shelia Ward, is looking to be appointed a temporary curator to make medical decisions and manage her affairs, including a "lucrative settlement agreement" to be signed at the end of the month, according to court documents.

"By the time he had a stroke, he was engaged in several business ventures and was ready to sign a lucrative settlement agreement on or around April 30, 2019," according to the record. to manage his affairs and execute the settlement.

The documents were filed in the Superior Court in Los Angeles. Singleton is not married, according to the documents.

A phone call to Ward's attorney was not immediately returned Thursday. The Singleton representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Singleton is particularly known for his films that examine the complexities of poor neighborhood living and the age of maturity for African-American youth.

At age 24, he is the youngest filmmaker to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for his first film, 1991, "Boyz n the Hood".

He is also behind other blockbuster films such as "Rosewood", "Poetic Justice" and "2 Fast 2 Furious".
