Each year, Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen provide an overview of pesticide use in America.

In summary, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) analyzes the USDA data on chemicals found in grocery products. Then, the monitoring agency compiles it into an easily digestible list of fruits and vegetables that tend to contain the most and least pesticides in the last year.

While USDA data tends to be inconsistent (the electronic working group told us that the products tested each year vary, as well as the chemicals tested), the list provides helpful suggestions for those who are not familiar with it. Among us looking to avoid pesticides, which are now present in almost 70% of products sold in the United States

"Some product samples may contain more than 50 different types of pesticides," said Olga Naidenko, Ph.D., GTE Senior Science Advisor, at mbg. In total, the latest analysis identified 225 different pesticides, all of which were found after the products were washed with cold water for 15 to 20 seconds and, if necessary, peeled.
