Discord, the gaming chat platform, has added a new feature called Stage Channels. These are described as “a special type of voice channel … where some people can speak and others can listen as an audience”. Essentially, that’s the defining feature of Clubhouse, the invitation-only mobile app that briefly garnered media attention earlier this year.
In a stage chain, some participants are marked as speakers while everyone is the silent audience. You might think it looks like a live broadcast without the video component or like a live podcast. Or wait – it’s the radio. You remember the radio, right? Because for a while there, I didn’t.
This feature has become sought after by social media companies in recent months due to the growing popularity of Clubhouse, a mobile app that has suddenly been used by Silicon Valley and US media. Back then, the consensus was that the key Clubhouse feature would be copied by every other current social media company – and now here is Discord with their answer.
The rumor last week that Microsoft is in talks to buy Discord for $ 10 billion (around £ 7.2 billion) adds further interest to this story. Microsoft has tried and failed to create their own streaming and community tool for gamers (RIP Mixer), so it’s no surprise that they would be interested in purchasing one that already exists.
For me, I like audio content only because I can listen to it while traveling (usually walking) more easily than I can watch video. This convenience is greatly diluted by the fact that the audio is live and streamed rather than downloaded before you leave the house.
