Dish Network announced Monday that it is immediately shutting down Sling Media’s Slingbox devices and shutting down its servers in two years, breaking down owners’ devices.
“Until then, most Slingbox models will continue to function normally, but the number of devices supported for viewing will steadily decrease as versions of SlingPlayer apps become obsolete and / or lose their compatibility,” said the company in a post on its website.
Dish said Slingbox was discontinued “to make room for innovative new products so that we can continue to serve our customers in the best possible way,” but added that it would not release any new products.
The company’s Slingbox, first released in 2005, was among the first products to offer “place-move” video technology – the ability to digitize your cable box signal and play it on a PC or a mobile device elsewhere in the house, or around the world.
Sling to Dish Network bought Sling Media in 2007 for $ 380 million, where the brand became the basis of the company’s video streaming service, Sling TV.
