Disney CEO Bob Iger resigned from Apple's board of directors just months before the two companies launched independent streaming services.
Iger resigned on September 10, according to a document filed by Apple with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. The same day, Apple unveiled the launch date and the subscription price for Apple TV Plus, which officially competes with Apple and Disney.
"I have the utmost respect for Tim Cook, his team at Apple and the other board members," Iger said in a statement released by The Hollywood journalist. "Apple is one of the most admired companies in the world, known for the quality and integrity of its products and people, and I am always grateful to have served on the company's board of directors."
Iger joined Apple's board of directors in 2011, but the relationship between Disney and Apple previously existed. In 2006, Disney bought Pixar, whose former CEO Apple, Steve Jobs, was the majority shareholder in 2006. Disney bought Pixar for $ 7.4 billion and, at the time, transformed Jobs into a major shareholder unique Disney. Iger was instrumental in the acquisition process.
Now that Disney and Apple are getting ready to tackle the respective streaming services Disney + and Apple TV Plus, in the area of direct sales to consumers, the split makes sense.
"While we will miss his contributions as a board member, we respect his decision and hope that our relationship with Bob and Disney will continue in the future," Apple said in a statement. the New York Times.
The departure of Iger from Apple's board of directors could remind you of the fact that Google's president, Eric Schmidt, left Apple's board of directors in 2009. Mr Schmidt joined the board of directors in 2006, but resigned in 2009 after Google's Android became a competitor of the iPhone. A press release issued at the time by Apple said that "Eric's effectiveness as a member of Apple's board of directors will be significantly reduced because he will have to challenge an even larger part of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest ".
Disney + and Apple TV Plus will be launched 11 days apart. Disney + will cost $ 6.99 a month when it launches Nov. 12, or can be bundled for $ 12.99 with Hulu-funded advertising and a sports streaming service, ESPN +. Apple TV Plus will be launched on November 1st for $ 4.99. He will launch with only nine titles.
