Disneyland ends annual pass program due to pandemic

Disneyland is ending its annual pass program after being closed for nearly a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the station said Thursday.

As Southern California experiences the worst increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, and with no clear idea when the theme park can finally reopen, Ken Potrock, president of Disneyland Resort, said in a statement. let the station be “sunsetting” the popular annual passes and issue refunds for eligible members.

“We would like to thank our annual pass holders for their understanding during this time of closure,” said Potrock. “We are currently developing new membership offerings that will use consumer insights to provide choice, flexibility and value to our biggest fans.”

The Walt Disney Company closed the Anaheim Resort and several other major parks in March 2020 as much of the world closed. Resort officials had planned to reopen Disneyland in mid-July at limited capacity, but those plans were scrapped due to a spike in COVID-19 cases across California.

Despite the price increases in recent years, the annual pass program continued to be a popular option for Southern California families and other die-hard Disney fans who spent their free time riding Splash. Mountain, wander around Fantasyland and stroll Main Street with an ice cream cone in hand.

“As the holder of a multi-year annual pass to Disneyland, I am quite heartbroken by this news,” tweeted Lauren J. Mapp, reporter for the San Diego Union-Tribune. “I couldn’t wait to go back once it was safe to do so, but I’m not sure if it will make more financial sense.”
