Disney plans to release the rest of its 2021 films exclusively in theaters, the company said on Friday.
Most will be played in theaters for over a month before arriving on its Disney + streaming platform.
The move follows the company’s latest box office hit with Marvel’s “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which only hit theaters on September 3.
The film broke the Labor Day weekend record, grossing $ 94 million, according to Variety.
Disney has announced that its animated musical fantasy “Encato” will hit theaters before Thanksgiving on November 24 and will play for 30 days. The film, which features music written by award-winning Hamilton composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, tells the story of a family who lives in a magical house in the mountains of Colombia.
Five more releases will air in theaters for at least 45 days, the company said. Marvel’s “Eternals” is slated for release in November, while Steven Spielberg’s musical “West Side Story” will debut in December.
Other films include the historical drama “The Last Duel”, the sci-fi comedy “Ron’s Gone Wrong” and the period spy film “The King’s Man”.
Since the pandemic forced theaters across the country to close, Disney + and other streaming services have experimented with releasing movies both online and in theaters at the same time.
The live-action Mulan remake had a double release, as did “Wonder Woman 1984” and “Black Widow”. The latter led to a lawsuit filed by his star, Scarlett Johansson, who claimed that the decision violated his contract.
“There is no merit in this filing,” said a Disney spokesperson. “The lawsuit is particularly sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. “
Disney previously reported that “Black Widow” grossed $ 158 million when it opened at the box office worldwide. He also said the film grossed more than $ 60 million in Disney + Premier Access purchases as part of its $ 218.8 million opening weekend.
With Friday’s announcement, the company indicated its confidence in audiences wanting to return to theaters, despite the United States grappling with an increase in the number of cases driven by the Delta variant.
