The Dixie Fire in California became the second largest wildfire in state history, the Washington Post reported.
State officials said on Sunday that the wildfire had spread to more than 463,000 acres of land. It is the second largest fire in the history of the state behind the complex wildfire of last August.
Some of the state’s largest fires started this year in dry conditions and record temperatures, the Post noted.
According to Cal Fire data, tThe Dixie Fire comes second behind the August 2020 complex fire, which burned more than one million acres and burned more than 900 structures.
The historic town of Greenville was destroyed last week in the wildfire, with 14,000 buildings likely to be destroyed in its path, the Post reported. Authorities were working to prevent the blaze from reaching Crescent Mills, a few miles away.
The Dixie Forest Fire damaged 589 buildings and injured three firefighters, the Post noted. There were no deaths.
