DNC president defends debate schedule after Biden says election process begins "too early"

"In fact, it started earlier in the past when we were in the process of determining how much debate and when to start, we looked at it 30 or 40 years ago." Facilitator Chuck Todd urged Perez on the timing of the debate, which will begin in June, and referred to comments made on Saturday by Biden, who is considering a bid for 2020.

"I think we have a tendency, especially in the states, to start the whole electoral process much too early," Biden told Munich.

Perez, however, said Sunday that the schedule of preliminary debates would work because "people are really eager to learn what our candidates think".

Sources close to Biden's plans told The Hill last week that Biden is almost certain to join the race.
