One night after parrying off the success of his first three seasons with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Will muschamp doubled down on comments made after their 48-3 loss to Texas A&M.
Muschamp wanted fans to remember that he won more games in his first three seasons in South Carolina than any other head coach on the program. He repeated a line that was once a crutch for press conferences and encore club speech events.
However, Muschamp’s fifth straight loss to Texas A&M has dropped South Carolina to 2-4 this season. Of course, 2020 follows a 2019 campaign that saw the Gamecocks finish 4-8.
After a blowout loss at College Station, the 2019 season ended mercilessly two weeks later with another loss to Clemson. Thanks to Covid and the SEC, South Carolina won’t have a regular season finale with the hated ACC rival, whom they haven’t beaten since 2013, when Muschamp was in his third season in as a head coach in Florida.
Right now, the Gamecocks are suffering back-to-back losses to LSU and Texas A&M. And with a trip to Ole Miss in the books for next Saturday, tensions continue to mount within the fanbase, among others.
Muschamp was asked on Sunday about South Carolina’s latest results and how he can continue to convince people that things are moving in the right direction. His response was not much different from what he expressed on Saturday night.
“It’s getting frustrating for me because we’ve done some things here,” said Muschamp. “I think we’re losing sight of that as we keep moving forward. It’s frustrating. Our last two ball games have been poor, but we look forward to another opportunity.
Ole Miss is second in the SEC in total offense and third in scoring. In defense, the Rebels are bottom in the league in both categories.
Meetings with Missouri and Georgia will follow. The last game of the 2020 South Carolina schedule will be on December 5 in Kentucky.
“We have four big opportunities ahead of us and that’s what we need to focus on as staff and as a team,” said Muschamp, “But we’ve done some really good things here. I don’t want anyone to lose sight of this.
South Carolina have beaten each of the remaining four teams at least once since Muschamp’s first season. The Gamecocks won the only meeting with the Rebels in 2018. They are 3-1 against the Tigers, but 1-3 against the Tigers and Bulldogs.
The South Carolina Gamecocks are 28-29 in Muschamp’s 4.5 seasons as a head coach. He went 28-21 in four seasons in Florida.
