Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been subjected to scrutiny by the public, and some believe that Prince William and Kate Middleton are trying to take advantage of this situation. There has been a lot of competition between royal families lately, one making a mistake and the other immediately trying to do the opposite.
This autumn, the Sussex began their journey to Africa. But are they here because they want to help the community and adopt a high work ethic or are they trying to show the world that they are doing more than William and Middleton? Can they do both?
Are the Cambridges trying to compete with the Sussex for public favor?
When Harry and Markle were criticized for taking four private jets during an eleven-day period, William and Middleton immediately took their next flight with commercial airlines. Some people wonder if they did this to show the Sussex or if they just did not want to be criticized.
Harry and Markle then tried to correct their image by having lunch in a local pub. Many believe that the message they were trying to send was that they are just normal people. In contrast, William and Kate were called out of touch in the past.
The Sussex begin their trip to Africa with a lot of hope
This month, when Harry and Markle landed in Africa, they gave up the red carpet tradition. Instead, they were allowed to work and went to a women's shelter in Cape Cod just after the landing. Vanity Fair reports that the Royal Councilors were clear on the Sussex message for this trip: "We are here to work, it is not a holiday".
While in Africa, Harry and Markle have a busy schedule of 86 official engagements. They requested that meetings be as casual as possible. Security will always be strict, but the Sussex would like a relaxed environment, where they can really connect with the people they meet.
"It's really like they want things to happen," said a royal source. "There is no protocol that says you have to bow or show reverence when you meet them, it's really up to the individual."
Does the trip to Africa aim to show the world that they have a better work ethic than the Cambridges?
William and Middleton have already been criticized for their work ethic. With the Sussex clearly emphasizing hard work, it is not difficult to assume that they are trying to prove that they are more dedicated to the public than the Cambridges.
When Middleton joined the royal family, she had a very slow introduction to public life. According to Phil Dampier, royal expert, "The queen has already pointed out that Kate did not do much, so I think she had a fairly long entrance into the royal family."
On the other hand, Markle jumped right after becoming involved with Harry. Could the busy route during the trip to Africa be a way for Markle to show that she is a better worker than Middleton?
It makes sense that Markle is jealous of all the love that Middleton receives from the British people. When Markle joined the family for the first time, she was also very popular, maybe even more than Middleton. But since then, Markle's behavior has caused her to lose a lot of support she has received. She hopes perhaps that this trip to Africa will plunge her into the good graces of the British people.
The quarrel between Sussex and Cambridges is generally not healthy. But if it brings both families to take positive action with the British people, it may not be so bad in the long run. Although we all hoped that one day we could have these positive actions without quarreling.
