Does USC football have room to add the Florida transfer Chris Steele? How many wins will Clay Helton need in 2019 to keep his job? The mailbag is open.
The transfer portal dominated discussions around college football during the off-season. It is not surprising then that the portal has become a source of intrigue for American football this week.

A: Thursday's big story was five-star cornerback Chris Steele's decision to leave Florida after less than a semester in Gainesville.
First, Steele should be commended for entering the transfer portal because of Gator's management of his roommate quarterback Jones. Steele told the coaches that he shared an uncomfortable position with Jones, but they would not accept his request for a dormitory change until the summer, according to Zach Abolverdi of the Gainesville Sun.
The fact that Jones leaves Florida after being accused of sexual assault suggests the nature of Steele's objections to his roommate.

Brenda Tracy, survivor of a gang rape, activist and founder of the "Set the Expectation" campaign, tweeted Steele "did exactly what I asked all players to talk to and hold each other accountable." She spoke with recruits at The Opening's Nike Camp last year. Steele himself retweeted his message.
With this backdrop in place, there is no doubt that USC should be prepared to report to Steele, who committed to the Trojans before signing with Florida in December.
But the question is whether USC will have a place for him or not.

It becomes more complicated.
With regard to overall scholarship limits, Trojans should have room. If the likes of Velus Jones, Josh Imatorbhebhe and Matt Fink do not entail the transfer, and that players who did not participate in Spring Camp like Keyshawn "Pie" Young and Daniel Imatorbbhebhe will not come back, USC will probably attend the fall camp with 80 stock players on the books.
However, schools are also limited to 25 annual additions, and that's where USC may not have a chance.
Trojans added 25 players to the 2019 promotion. Ten of those enrolled early in the USC, making it count against the initial 2018 bursary count instead of this year's. We just do not know how many of them have been counted down.

USC had an open place for wide receiver Puka Nacua, before it reversed and signed with Washington. Since then, this transfer has been claimed by the transfer of offensive material, Drew Richmond.
This means that it is quite possible that the Trojans do not have room for Steele. If this is the case, Steele's lawsuit will be very clear.

A: Perhaps the most relevant question is: how many victories will it take to win the Pac-12 South?
USC fans may not be very enthusiastic at the prospect of a 7-5 season, but this could easily allow the Trojans to win the division title. After all, a 6-3 record in conference has been enough to win the South three times since the formation of the Pac-12.
If USC goes to the Pac-12 title match, Helton's work is almost certainly safe, whether his record is 7-5 or 10-2.
If the title Pac-12 South is not on the table, Lynn Swann will have a decision to make.
