The Dodgers have announced the acquisition of an outfielder Billy McKinney Mets for the outfield perspective Carlos rincon. New York had appointed McKinney for a mission earlier in the week. To create space on the list, Los Angeles appointed the reliever Jake roseau for assignment.
McKinney has already adapted for the Brewers and Mets this season. Between the two clubs, he compiled a .213 / .282 / .415 line with eight home runs out of 202 home plate appearances. That’s more or less a game for the .225 / .288 / .430 left-handed hitter’s career line in four seasons.
The 26-year-old is hitting a little more than average and not doing a lot of walks – hence the low base percentage – but he has a good amount of power. In addition to 613 appearances on the MLB table (about a full season), McKinney has scored 26 home runs. He has an ISO of 0.205 (hitting less batting average) which sits a bit north of the league average of 0.163.
McKinney has run out of options in the minor leagues. The Dodgers will need to keep him on the active roster or make him available again to other clubs. He’ll add a left-handed bat to the outfield / corner bench mix and could save playing time against right-handed people when LA is resting AJ Pollock. Pollock is having a very solid second consecutive season, but he has had his fair share of injury issues in the past.
The Dodgers selected Reed two weeks ago, positioning the right-hander to record his first action in the big league. Reed has since pitched 5 1/3 three-runner innings, striking out five while tossing a pair of walks. The former Twins prospect has a 5.57 ERA over 21 AAA innings this year, split between major Angels and Dodgers affiliates. To Reed’s credit, he’s been much better since joining the Dodgers organization and his strikeout and minor league walk rates (29.5% and 7.4%, respectively) have been impressive.
Los Angeles will have a week to trade Reed or expose him to waivers. Between his recent success and the remaining three option years in the minor leagues, there is a possibility that another club will add him via a minor transaction.
In exchange for McKinney, the Mets add Rincon to the farming system. The 23-year-old corner fielder spent the year with Double-A Tulsa, reaching .263 / .343 / .470 with 12 home runs out of 265 home plate appearances despite playing in a league friendly with the pitchers. Rincon has great raw power, but the scouts have expressed concern about his approach to home plate and his lack of defensive value as a corner player.
