Cody Bellinger and the Los Angeles Dodgers were on the wrong side of an umpire’s call in an 8-5 losing effort on day one of the 2021 MLB season.
In the third inning of their game against NL West rival Colorado Rockies, left swinger Bellinger smashed baseball deep into the opposite field. Rockies left fielder Raimel Tapia leapt forward in hopes of getting the ESPN roundup, but missed it by hitting the outfield wall. Bellinger’s explosion ended in the stands for a two-point home run.

Or so we thought.
Justin Turner of the Dodgers was on first base and he thought Tapia fell with the ball. So he rushed to first base to make sure he didn’t get nailed for a double play and a second out. While returning to base, Turner accidentally passed Bellinger on the base paths.
Yes it is not allowed. Ever since Bellinger technically passed the main runner by running around the bases, the former National League MVP has been called up. His two-run homerun counted only for one point. And instead of being credited for a home run, Bellinger was awarded a single in a run.

Tapia had two RBIs for the Rockies in the win. Pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez took the win, despite three runs in two innings pitched.
In the loss, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw allowed five earned runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Turner, Bellinger, Corey Seager, and Max Muncy all had an RBI each for Los Angeles.
