It’s an astonishing development, which would have massive repercussions in the National League playoff race. Scherzer and Turner are arguably the two main players in the commercial market. The Dodgers acquiring the two as part of a global deal – just hours after their division rivals were due to land Scherzer – would change the league if the deal was pushed to the finish line.
Scherzer is one of the best pitchers of his generation, and the future Hall of Famer continued to pitch at near peak form. He pitched 111 innings in nineteen starts, working at a 2.76 / 3.59 FIP ERA. He gave up a few homers (1.46 HR / 9), but Scherzer’s strikeouts and goalscoring numbers are still among the best in the game. The eight-time All-Star has knocked out 34.3% of batters faced while handing out free passes to a paltry 6.5% of opponents. Among the starters with more than 50 innings pitched, only Jacob of Grom, Tyler glasnow, Patrick Sandoval and Shane Bieber generated swinging strikes at a clip higher than Scherzer’s 16.5% mark.
It is the continuation of what has been a remarkable tenure in Washington. Turner is one of the best players in the sport, although he hasn’t made an All-Star team in a remarkable enough way before this season. On top of that top-of-the-line offense, he’s one of the most dangerous baserunners in the game and a great defensive shortstop. FanGraphs reckons Turner has earned seven wins over substitution in the past two years, a mark that only trails Fernando Tatis Jr. among positional players.
