Dodgers to put Mookie Betts on injured list

Dodgers Superstar Mookie betts is on the 10-day injured list with a right hip injury, manager Dave Roberts told reporters (including Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times). Relief Edwin uceta will be reinstated from the 10-day IL to take his place on the active list. Betts is being sent back to LA for further consideration.

This was the generally expected result after Betts was struck out of the roster last night with hip pain. Roberts didn’t specify any sort of timeline, although it stands to reason that will become clearer after his review by medics tomorrow. It’s an unfortunate moment to lose one of the best players in the sport, as the Dodgers lag the Giants by four games in the NHL with 49 games remaining this season. There’s no question LA will make the playoffs, but losing Betts makes their efforts to avoid Wild Card knockout play all the more difficult.

Betts had a slow start to the year by their high standards. After a good but unspectacular April, the 28-year-old returned his game to peak form. It has been very hot lately, hitting .373 / .422 / 0.720 since early July. That scorching streak brought his season line down to a fantastic .277 / .378 / .521 (143 wRC +) from 397 appearances at home plate.

No team is better positioned to withstand the loss of an MVP-caliber player than the Dodgers, who still have a collection of star-studded talent. That said, there’s no way you can really replace someone like Betts, and his time on the shelf coincides with a tough time on the schedule. Twelve of Los Angeles’ next fifteen games will face teams – Phillies, Mets and Padres – in the playoff hunt, although New York has struggled in recent times.
