Over the past few weeks, rumors have suggested that Game Boy games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online. This rumor came from several sources, including insider NateDrake. During Nintendo Direct, Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games were revealed as part of a more expensive tier for Nintendo Switch Online, but nothing was said about Game Boy games. However, several insiders are now saying Game Boy games are still a part of the service’s plans, including NateDrake and Eurogamer editor-in-chief Tom Philips. Philips claims to have heard about Game Boy games from the same sources that informed them about N64 and Genesis.
“Fwiw, N64 and Mega Drive were the two NSO platforms I had heard of alongside Game Boy / Color. I imagine N64 / Mega Drive are deployed first because they are more appealing to entice people to upgrade. “Philips wrote on Twitter.
It is certainly possible that Nintendo has decided to focus on Genesis and Nintendo 64, as these consoles are more appealing to viewers. NateDrake seems to have a different theory, however: The insider believes these games could hit the standard price point for Nintendo Switch Online, and Nintendo might not have wanted to confuse viewers about the options included in each pricing structure. If so, that would probably be good news for those who don’t think it’s worth upgrading from the current level.
“I anticipate that Game Boy and Game Boy Color are part of the current Nintendo Switch Online service and they [Nintendo] didn’t want to confuse the two, ”NateDrake said in a recent episode of Nate the Hate.
Readers should always keep in mind that this is all just a rumor and plans are constantly changing in the video game industry. However, both Phillips and NateDrake have proven to be quite reliable in the past. Considering the importance of this rumor and the number of great Nintendo games that have been on the Game Boy, it seems a safe bet that it will happen at some point. For now, fans will just have to wait and see!
