Does Prince William have more freedom to speak politics than other royals?

Being royal, it's following a long list of rules and protocols. The British royal family likes to introduce itself to the public in a certain way, and Queen Elizabeth is quite strict in what she does not allow. Many royal fans are aware of the rules that dictate how the royal family – women in particular – should dress. There are also rules that dictate many other behaviors, such as the fact that at dinners, when the queen has finished eating, everyone has to stop eating. The list of rules and royal protocol is long and detailed, and there is no doubt that it can sometimes become overwhelming.

One of the most stringent rules for members of the royal family is that they are not allowed to have political opinions or even to talk about politics. Opinions must be reserved for themselves and they certainly can not make public statements on political issues. Prince William, however, violated this strict rule on more than one occasion, apparently without his grandmother, the Queen, having reverberated on him. So, as a future king, does Prince William have more freedom to speak politics than other members of the family?

Why members of the royal family are not allowed to talk about politics

Most people have talked about their political views at some point, so why should the royal family refrain from doing so? The answer is quite simple. This is considered "unconstitutional". As such, they must remain neutral on political issues and certainly not allowed to vote. For centuries it has been said that monarchs represented the country as a whole, which means that speaking openly about political issues or publicly supporting one side of a political disagreement is definitely forbidden.

Prince William talked about Brexit

Some members of the royal family are known to get around the rules and it seems that Prince William could be one of them. During a recent trip to Cumbria with his wife, the future king seemed to challenge the royal protocol by evoking the subject of Brexit when he asked the farmers if they were concerned about the issue. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge apparently would have learned that a Brexit without agreement could be a "perfect storm" and many farmers could be forced to close their doors. Of course, Prince William wants to know more about how the public feels. Although it seems that William decided not to discuss politics, he did not break it because he did not express his own opinions.

The not-so-subtle reference of Prince William in a speech

The conversation in Cumbria was not the first time William mentioned Brexit. In a speech he made a few months ago, the Duke of Cambridge expressed his hope that people "gather" during difficult times. The speech was delivered about four weeks before Brexit, and his remarks are very much in keeping with his generous and compassionate personality for which he is known.

Does Prince William have more freedom to speak politics than other members of the royal family?

The recent actions of Prince William may leave people wondering if he gets more freedom to speak politics than other members of the royal family. Since he is a future king, it would seem that William gets a little more freedom than the members of his family. After all, consider that his father, Prince Charles, who is also a future king, has always been an important proponent of sustainability and has repeatedly spoken about climate change – something that skeptics might not like climate change.

It is likely, however, that Prince William must choose his words carefully and he certainly can not participate in heated discussions on political issues. The royal family is a pretty interesting group of people. It's not surprising that everything they say and do fascinates members of the public, and it's nice to see that their new modern ways give Prince William a little more clemency when it comes to talking politics .
