Eight people and a dog were injured early Sunday in downtown Nashville after an argument over the dog led to a shooting, officials said.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said the incident happened around 1 a.m. at the corner of Second Avenue North and Commerce Street, just one block from the city’s famous Broadway neighborhood.
A small crowd was in the area when two men started arguing over a dog that belonged to one of them.

The dog’s owner reportedly pulled out a handgun, police said, while the other man left and returned minutes later with a group of other men and his own gun.

The two groups then began to fight, exchanging gunfire in the city center.
A total of eight people, all adults, were hit or grazed by bullets, police told FOX17.
Randell Stroud, who was on his way home with a group of friends when he ran into the two men, said it was “pandemonium” when gunshots rang out.

“The first blow it came from behind me to the left and it grazed the side of my head here. It hit me and I felt that intense pressure and that intense type of scorching heat, ”Stroud told WKRN-TV. “It was four or five repetitions bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!”
While Stroud said he was treated at the scene, seven people were taken to local hospitals with non-fatal injuries.
The dog was also shot in the hip and taken to an emergency vet, the Tennessean reported. The condition of the canine was not yet known.

Police said they recovered a handgun at the scene and the investigation was ongoing.
