A dog is recovering from being found buried alive last week on a beach in Hawaii, according to a relief agency.

PAWS of Hawaii said on Facebook that the dog, Leialoha, had been discovered on July 9 on an Oahu Island beach "incredibly swollen, burned by the sun and missing 90% of its fur" .

"This beautiful girl was found by one of our team members," the group said. "Someone had just bury it and they had a machete so who knows what would happen next."

Officials said they discovered lacerations in their left leg and suspected that the same man caught burying the animal had used a knife to cut the dog.

The dog was taken to the Aloha Affordable Veterinary Services with "severe skin disease and dehydration"

"Serious sunburn, lesions, swollen limbs at its extremities – this is a sign of dehydration and very poor care," said veterinarian Kelly Dowdall-Garberson at KITV.

The dog has since been brought into a foster family. On Saturday, the group shared an update from the welcome mother identified as Amanda.

"Leialoha has come so far since Tuesday night, initially leaving only her kennel to go to the bathroom," said Amanda, quoted by the group. "Last night she came out, while we had friends to see what was up for dinner and enjoyed being under the coffee table, she still has a long way to go, but the worst is over."

PAWS of Hawaii said they were expecting it to "bounce back" and thanked the people who donated to cover Leialoha's medical expenses, according to Storyful.
