Dog the Bounty Hunter has stated that he believes Brian Laundrie is still alive somewhere in the wild because he is a “survivalist” and has shown no indication that he intends to kill himself.
“I guess, you know, he’s alive. He’s not alive and is fine, but he’s alive,” the reality star, whose real name is Duane Chapman, told TMZ on Monday.
Chapman, 68, said he had no reason to believe the 23-year-old fugitive – who is wanted for questioning over the disappearance and death of Gabby Petito – was suicidal when he took off in the middle of increasing attention to the case.
“There’s no evidence he’s suicidal like this anywhere. And you know he didn’t tell anyone that, ”he said.
“If you go to his Instagram pages and look at what kind of person he really is and the books he reads, and especially a very favorite book, [those are] not books for suicidal people.
Laundrie’s shared YouTube page with Petito featured a clip of him reading Jeff VanderMeer’s “Annihilation,” a novel about people exploring uncharted territory who have gone missing.
Chapman said he believed Laundrie might be hiding in Fort de Soto Park in Pinellas County, where he camped last month with his family.
“He’s going fishing or camping… with his parents, while he’s here in this camp area, the bomb falls,” Chapman said, referring to the news of Petito’s disappearance. “Brian Laundrie is making national headlines. They watch it on TV and they’re like ‘Oh no.’ “
“So at that point they had to make decisions and since he’s a survivalist – he was alone in the Appalachians for two months at a time… It was the only thing to do,” he said. he continued.
Chapman said he collected evidence suggesting Laundrie was still in the area a few days ago.
“Is he here a few days ago?” Absoutely. But could he have gone out during the night? Then he should have some help, I guess it could be close to a family member, and you know he’s gone somewhere else, ”he said.
Laundrie was traveling across the country with Petito when she disappeared in late August.
The body of the 22-year-old Long Island native was found in a remote Wyoming campground on September 19, nearly three weeks after Laundrie returned home to Florida without her.
Laundrie refused to cooperate with authorities and took off on September 14, her parents said, and has since been the subject of a massive manhunt.
