The company announced Thursday that it will open 975 new stores in the United States this year. Dollar General will also transform 1,000 old stores with new queues to allow impulse last minute purchases. He will also beautify his health and beauty sections.

Dollar General has been growing for years in rural America. It opened 900 stores in 2018 and 1,315 the previous year. It has more than 14,500 stores across the country and sales have increased for 29 consecutive years.
General Dollar (DG) It mainly addresses low-income and middle-income clients in rural and suburban areas. This helps to stand out from the suburban chains as Dollar tree (LTRD) and Family Dollar, which targets urban customers. Family Dollar has struggled in recent years and will close nearly 400 stores this year.

Dollar General is looking to build stores in rural areas where a big box retailer or grocery store is not within 15 or 20 miles. This gives the company immediate proximity to buyers and requires more frequent visits to the stores. The company indicates that 75% of its sites are located in cities of 20,000 or less.

The uneven economic recovery in the United States has boosted Dollar General in recent years.

"While the economy is doing very well, our main customer continues to struggle," said Dollar General General Manager Todd Vasos last year.

Dollar General even jumped during the holidays. Dollar General sales in stores opened at least a year rose 4% in its last quarter compared to the previous year, exceeding analysts' expectations.

The closure of the US government has helped Dollar General sales, as the Department of Agriculture has anticipated the benefits of the February SNAP, the company said. More and more consumers have purchased food products and household products, such as kitchen utensils and small appliances.

In 2019, Dollar General plans to focus on selling groceries and fresh foods. It adds product sections and refrigerators to hundreds of stores.

Dollar General said that offering fruits and vegetables at shops located in rural and urban food deserts can "generate a huge amount of traffic".

The strategy could also help Dollar General to compete with larger rivals such as Walmart (WMT) and repel the threat of German supermarket chains Aldi and Lidl. Aldi has invested billions of dollars in new stores selling fresh produce. Last month, Lidl acquired a dozen Best Market grocery stores in New York and New Jersey.
