Little diva’s $ 1 million donation to Covid-19 research was partly used to fund Moderna’s promising Covid-19 vaccine – something she didn’t even know until his name appeared among other sponsors in a preliminary vaccine report.
In her media appearances on Tuesday, Parton beamed with pride and excitement at the news.
“Praise the Lord!” she told “Today” hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager. “I’m just very thankful that this is happening, and if I have anything to do with it, that’s great.”
Parton, who said she found out her donation contributed to the vaccine trial on Tuesday morning, told BBC “The One Show” that she felt “very honored and very proud” to be a little piece of which could be an essential treatment for Covid -19.
“I felt so proud to have been a part of this little seed money which will hopefully grow into something great and help heal this world,” she said. “I am a very proud girl today to know that I have something to do with something that will help us get through this crazy pandemic.”
Parton first donated to the Covid-19 research efforts at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in early April, when there were around 200,000 cases of Covid-19 in the United States. Today, there are over 11.3 million cases and nearly 250,000 Americans have died.
The Moderna vaccine is said to be 94.5% effective against the coronavirus, according to the first data published by the company. Vaccinations could start as early as the end of December, said infectious disease specialist Dr Anthony Fauci, although they are first made available to high-risk groups such as healthcare workers, the elderly and people with underlying health problems.
In April, Parton encouraged fans who could afford it to donate to the Vanderbilt Health Covid-19 research fund. He has since raised over $ 100,000 of his goal of $ 250,000.
