With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa available in the air due to a thumb injury, the Dolphins might consider adding depth to their table.

The team visited free agent Jake Rudock on Friday.

Rudock, who has spent time on both Miami’s offseason / preseason roster and the in-season practice squad, is originally from Miami. He played college football in Michigan and entered the NFL via the sixth round of the 2016 draft, with the Lions.

Coach Brian Flores said on Friday he will have to review the training film before deciding whether Tagovailoa can play on Sunday. The active roster has only one other quarterback: Ryan Fitzpatrick. Rookie Reid Sinnett is part of the practice squad.

Tagovailoa slapped his left thumb on a teammate’s helmet in practice on Wednesday. He’s been limited in practice all week and he’s officially questionable for Sunday’s Jets game.

Interest in Rudock suggests that Tagovailoa’s thumb may not heal quickly. Although he could be signed at any time, Rudock would not be able to join the team until he had passed five days of COVID-19 testing.
