While the Dolphins haven’t signed a single player for a 2021 standard contract this month, the club still lost around $ 8 million in cap space, as reported by Barry Jackson and Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. That’s because a few players have hit inducements in their contracts that raised their 2021 cap fees.
For example, WR DeVante ParkerThe 2021 maximum number has increased from $ 11 million to $ 12 million, while security Eric Rowethe number rose from $ 5.05 million to $ 6.05 million. As such, Miami now has a cap of $ 25.4 million, assuming the cap of $ 180 million does not increase.
It’s not insignificant leeway, but the Dolphins have a number of high-value draft picks, including No. 3 and 18 overall picks and two second-round picks. If they keep all of those picks, Miami is expected to allocate around $ 11.9 million to their Draft Class, by Jackson and Beasley. That doesn’t leave a ton of space for the team to do the rest of their off-season activities.
After all, the ‘Fins will have to sign a wide receiver, a backup QB and several linebackers, and they will also have to sign C again. Dolphins have many options to create additional space, including cutting safety Bobby mccain or restructuring of linebacker contract Kyle van noy. And the situation would be completely changed if the club traded for Texans QB Deshaun Watson, which seems like a legitimate possibility.
