WASHINGTON (AP) – Dominion Voting Systems filed a defamation lawsuit against lawyer Sidney Powell on Friday, asking for at least $ 1.3 billion for Powell’s “fierce accusations” that the company rigged the presidential election for Joe Biden.
“Dominion is taking this action to set the record straight,” the company said in the lawsuit in federal court in Washington.
Powell claimed for weeks without evidence that the electoral technology provider, whose vote-counting equipment was used in several states, was part of a ploy to steal the election from President Donald Trump. Powell has represented Trump in a series of unsuccessful lawsuits to challenge the election result.
She claimed the company was created in Venezuela to rig the election of late leader Hugo Chavez and has the ability to change voices.
There was no widespread election fraud, which several election officials across the country, including former Trump attorney general William Barr, have confirmed. Republican governors in Arizona and Georgia, key battlefield states critical to Biden’s victory, have also vouched for the integrity of the elections in their states. Dominion said that when she officially told Powell her claims were bogus and asked him to take them down, she “doubled down,” using her Twitter account with over a million followers to amplify the claims.
Dominion security director Eric Coomer has previously sued Powell, Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani and the president’s smear campaign after being pressured into hiding by death threats. Conservative columnists and news outlets have also been cited in Coomer’s lawsuit, filed in Colorado, where the company is based.
Powell did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.
