Dominion Energy is warning customers in Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina to prepare for "dangerous conditions and widespread breakdowns" once Hurricane Dorian heads north.
Meteorologists predict tropical storm level winds and precipitation from a Category 1 hurricane, including at least 2 to 4 inches in some areas and up to 6 inches in others.
A surveillance of tropical storms and storm surges is still in place for the entire Hampton Roads area.
Dominion warned in a press release that the storm was likely to cause widespread blackouts.
Customers need to be prepared for several days of breakdowns, said national officials.
Supplies to assemble for a hurricane preparation kit include:
- Batteries and flashlights / lanterns

- Cash (power outages could affect ATMs)
- Non-perishable food
- First Aid Kit, Drugs and Hygiene Items
Residents with generators must ensure that their equipment is fully fueled, tested and properly connected.
As residents prepare for the storm, Dominion is also doing its part to prepare its crews and prepare the equipment for the storm.
Once the storm is over and secure, Dominion crews will assess the damage and begin to restore power to customers affected by outages.
The first customers to have restored electricity will be the facilities 'essential to public health and safety, such as hospitals, fire and police services and treatment systems'. water". The second priority concerns residential areas and businesses requiring major repairs.
Finally, electricity will be restored in individual homes and small groups of customers.
Power outages in Virginia can be reported on the Dominion Outage Center.
