Embittered by critical comments from some prominent Republicans, incumbent President Donald Trump is considering launching a new third party, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.
Trump, hours away from his one-term presidency, would like to call it the “Patriot Party,” the Journal reported, citing sources “familiar with the matter.”
The report comes after Senator Mitch McConnell, the top Republican in the U.S. Senate, delivered a speech on Tuesday accusing Trump of this month’s riot on the U.S. Capitol.
“The crowd was fed on lies,” he said. “They were brought on by the president and other powerful people.”
It is not clear whether the effort would involve recruiting and pitching candidates or whether it would serve as a media and business empire for the former president.
In 1968, George Wallace, the far-right segregationist governor of Alabama, won five states by running for the US Independent Party. No third party candidate has won a statewide federal election since, though a number of Independents have been elected to Congress.
