WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump will oppose any attempt by the Treasury Department to submit his tax returns to Congress, a lawyer for Mr. Trump said on Monday, days after the Justice Department ordered the agency to provide the documents to a House panel.

“There is no evidence of wrongdoing here and I oppose the release of the statements not only on behalf of my client but on behalf of all future holders of the post of President of the United States,” said Ronald Fischetti, a lawyer. for Mr. Trump.

The Treasury Department told a federal judge on Friday that it intends to comply with the House Ways and Means Committee’s request for documents, in light of the Justice Department’s new opinion, but would give give Mr. Trump a reasonable opportunity to object. If the committee receives the documents, it could make at least some of them public.

A judge has asked the parties to set a deadline for written arguments by Wednesday. It could be months before the judge finally decides whether the Treasury Department should deliver the reports to Congress. This decision could then be appealed.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.
