The leadership was given in a presidential memorandum on Monday, which called for a series of new rules.

Critics say the fees would put the process out of reach for many people.

Under the current system, asylum seekers who enter the United States legally and illegally are allowed to work while their claim is being processed.

Mr Trump said that a regulation should be developed to ensure that asylum applications are processed by an immigration court within 180 days, except in exceptional circumstances.

While asylum cases are already supposed to be completed within this time frame, a backlog of more than 800,000 cases means that asylum claims can take years to complete.

Trump's orders to the justice and homeland security departments mark a dramatic change in US policy.

He gave the officials 90 days to introduce the new regulations.

The orders come amidst Trump's efforts to stem the tide of Central American immigrants trying to move to the United States.
