Don’t make this common and fatal mistake on iPhone or Android

I spent the last week going to a festival (it’s slowly coming back to me what it is), and in a change from the typical British summer – slightly less rain than in winter – it got hot .

Really hot.

Like 30ºC (around 86ºF). And it’s outside. Get into a vehicle or a building, and it can get a lot hotter.

While I was at the festival, relaxing with my drone (it’s a pretty handy fan, albeit noisy) a guy came up to me asking if I knew what was going on with his phone.

It was no longer in the form of a telephone.

And it was extremely hot to the touch.

At first I thought maybe it was a case of battery thermal runaway but talking to the guy things got clearer.

He had left his phone – a beautiful gold iPhone 12 Pro Max – in the holder stuck to his car’s windshield all day, and the phone’s battery had knocked the screen out of the frame.

It was the end of the road for this iPhone.

Now, what’s odd is that it’s not uncommon to see phones in brackets stuck to car windshields in the summer, igniting.

And it’s not just while the car is stationary – a phone in the window can get hot while the car is in motion, unless you have it in the direct stream of the air conditioning.

But leaving them there to cook inside a hot car is not good for the battery. In fact, overheating a handset – and remember that most of the time phones are in cradles these days, they’re also charging – is a sure-fire way to drain batteries.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen or heard about half a dozen dead phones and a few on-board GPS receivers die in the heat. The heat is not only brutal for the batteries, but it can also damage the screens.

It’s not just a problem in the car. It is just as much a problem at home or in the office.

And that’s not just a problem for phones. It is not a good idea to cook anything that contains a battery that you care about.

Here’s my rule of thumb: If the phone feels warm to the touch, find a cooler place. The battery can perform well in the summer when it is warmer, but it is in the winter that people see the side effects of battery degradation when their smartphones start to show reduced battery life.

If the phone is too hot to touch, you need to remove it from the charge, take it out of its case, turn it off, and let it cool.

And find a better place for him in the car, home or office.
