DOT Provisionally Approves Additional Frequencies for US Carriers to Tokyo Haneda

In January of this year, the United States and Japan reached an agreement in principle to create an additional 12 slots for daytime flights for US carrier operations at Haneda Airport in Tokyo.

As a result of this change, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines have requested a total of 19 additional daily frequencies between the United States and Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND) in February. . The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has tentatively approved applications from several US carriers for additional frequencies to Tokyo Haneda.

For now, US carriers have access to five Haneda slots and a Haneda night / early morning service.

A final decision of the DOT is expected in the coming weeks. The new services are expected to begin with the start of the 2020 summer circulation season and in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The preliminary ruling proposes the following slot allocations:

American Airlines

American Airlines may soon offer two new daily non-stop services from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Los Angeles (LAX). The carrier has announced that a LAX-HND service would complement its current service. The proposed route between Haneda and Dallas will be operated by Boeing 777-200, while the service offered by LAX will be operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The founding member of the Oneworld airlines alliance did not receive approval for his planned itinerary between Las Vegas and Haneda, which was also included in his application.

Delta Airlines

The DOT has provisionally authorized Delta Air Lines to operate five additional frequencies between the United States and Tokyo Haneda Airport.

Delta plans to operate its proposed link between Seattle and Haneda with brand new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, while the Airbus A350s will be deployed on the planned link between Detroit and Haneda. In addition, the provisionally approved frequency from Atlanta to Tokyo will be served by Boeing 777-200ER, while Portland (PDX) -Haneda will be operated by Airbus A330s. And its proposed Honolulu-Haneda flights are expected to be operated by Boeing 767-300ER.

The airline also requested another daily non-stop service between Honolulu and Tokyo Haneda. However, the second daily service was not granted in the preliminary allocation of slots.

United Airlines

Four daily non-stop daily flights will be offered to United from Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (EWR) and Washington (IAD). Its services offered from Guam and Houston to Tokyo Haneda have not been taken into account in the distribution of current slots.

In its application, United announced that its new Los Angeles route would be operated by the new Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, while all other frequencies would be served by the Boeing 777-200.

Hawaiian Airlines

The Honolulu-based airline received an additional non-stop daily flight between Honolulu and Tokyo Haneda. The airline already serves Tokyo Haneda from Kona and Honolulu.
