Earlier this week, when asked about the possibility of relinquishing his playing responsibilities, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said the possibility was “on the table.”
Apparently it’s a lot more than on the table.
Because according to the Philadelphia Inquirerof Jeff McLane, Pederson has already relinquished some of his playing duties to Press Taylor and Rich Scangarello this season.
Scangarello has apparently called games in two-minute situations all season, according to the report. This is especially noticeable because the Eagles have been statistically a much better offense in those situations where they have indulged their offense without fear and haste.
In addition, the report says that in the last few games, Pederson recently gave Taylor more playing responsibilities and could give him even more starting Sunday afternoon in Green Bay. The report does not say what dictates when Pederson assigns this job to Taylor.
This is all a bit odd because throughout this season, at least before this week, Pederson has firmly resisted any talk about his eventual retirement.
And even this week, he said this about that role:
“I’m proud to play and watch everything. I have to take everything into consideration. If I feel stuck or in a rut, I would definitely consider giving that up.
Perhaps the Eagles’ success under Scangarello in two-minute situations was reason enough for Pederson to keep it a secret. Or maybe there’s a competitive edge in defense, not knowing who is calling the plays in these situations. While the movie isn’t lying, the fact that a defense knows someone with Scangarello’s background is calling plays could give clues as to what’s to come.
Taylor has been with the Eagles since Chip Kelly’s days and has progressed. He was the QB assistant coach behind John DeFilippo and was promoted after Flip’s departure. And then he was promoted to the role of coordinator of the game of pass this offseason.
This offseason, the Eagles have also hired Scangarello as their main offensive assistant. He comes from Kyle Shanahan’s tree, but had been the Broncos’ offensive coordinator and playing player in 2019. He wasn’t widely regarded as a playing player last season, but he also wouldn’t. everything on his plate with the Eagles. this year.
With Taylor and Scangarello taking over some play call functions, that means Pederson has given them those responsibilities over Duce Staley and Marty Mornhinweg, who are two other potential candidates.
Even though Pederson would have given up parts of the play appeal, it’s still his favorite thing to do. Last month I asked him how he feels in this role:
“I feel good in the games that have been announced,” Pederson said after the loss to the Giants. “I even watched yesterday’s game and felt I was on the beat. I’ve always looked at the game through the eyes of the quarterback and how he sees it and how he sees it. I think it’s important that the quarterback and the appellant are on the same page this way and Carson and I had these conversations during the week and the day before the game and go through a lot of different scenarios and we are prepared that way.
“And look, not all games will be perfect. There will be mistakes and there will be things that we have to overcome that are part of our job. Nobody is perfect. I am by no means perfect. I’m going to make a decision error, I’m going to make a play-call error, but at the same time, I’m hoping I can do my job to put the offense in a position to succeed.
Pederson will have his last virtual press conference this week on Friday morning at 10:30 am and we’ll know soon enough what he has to say on all of that.
