Doug Pederson was previously Brett Favre’s replacement. Favre currently does not have Pederson’s back.
Appearing on ESPN First take, Favre said the Pederson Eagles should have kept quarterback Nick Foles instead of Carson Wentz after the 2018 season.
“I think [Wentz] is very capable, ”Favre said, via Martin Frank of the Delaware News Journal. “I think we all agree that he has the tools. I actually thought they should have kept Nick Foles rather than Carson Wentz, just depending on the production and where they got to.
“You know, they won a Super Bowl with Foles. They obviously bet on [Wentz’s] upside down, but how many years do you let it linger before you stick with it or cut the bait?
Pederson was asked about Favre’s comments by reporters on Wednesday.
“I respect Brett’s opinion,” Pederson said, via Frank. “We’re friends. I haven’t spoken to him, and he’s entitled to that, and that’s about it. Pressed by the situation, Pederson finally said, ‘Carson is our guy.’
“Carson was our pick in the draft,” Pederson said of the man who took second overall in 2016 after the Eagles traded. “Carson is the guy who will carry us and lead this football team. Listen, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. These are not my words. They are not [G.M. Howie Roseman’s] words, [owner Jeffrey Lurie’s] words. Those are [Favre’s] words. I respect that opinion. Whatever he wants to say is good. We will remain friends. It doesn’t bother me one way or the other.
The Eagles have both doubled and trebled on Wentz, beyond making the move to have him more than four years ago. After 2018, the Eagles let Foles go via free agency, renewing vows with Wentz. Then the Eagles gave Wentz a new contract, paying him north of $ 30 million a year in new money.
Looking back, should they have kept Foles? Without doubt, yes. But they didn’t. So, they don’t gain anything by admitting it now.
In practice, Wentz’s contract ties him to the Eagles until 2021. At this point, the question is whether they keep him or move on. Depending on how he’s played this year, moving on becomes a real possibility, unless things change.
