One of the most puzzling and worrying facets of the coronavirus is how it remains, with many patients exhibiting symptoms of COVID long after their so-called ‘recovery’. Known as long-haul COVIDs and defined as those whose symptoms last more than 28 days after infection, these patients have confused top medical experts since the phenomenon emerged last year. Now, Anthony Fauci, MD, the Chief Medical Advisor to the President Joe biden, warns of some key signs to watch out for. “We take this very seriously for the simple reason that even though a small fraction, and it seems to be more than a small fraction of people, have persistent symptoms … it can really be a problem,” Fauci said during a new interview with Rachel Maddow.

“It’s a real phenomenon. I, personally, treat and help a number of people who have post-acute COVID-19 syndrome,” Fauci continued during his appearance on Jan. 22. “They are doing well virologically. The virus is no longer identified there, but they have lingering symptoms which can be debilitating.… It can be very disturbing.

Fauci told Maddow that the National Institutes of Health, where he is director of the Department of Allergies and Infectious Diseases, is making “a major investment in research dollars to try to uncover the full extent of this, clues to the mechanisms underlying., what we can do to treat it “- and it also revealed the most worrying long-term symptoms of COVID. Extreme fatigue, which can persist for months, was the first symptom Fauci listed as being commonly exhibited in these long COVID patients. In an investigation by Survivor Corps – a Facebook group that connects COVID-19 survivors with the medical, scientific and academic research communities – led by Natalie Lambert, MD, an associate professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, researchers spoke to over 1,500 long-haul travelers about their symptoms, and fatigue was something 100% of them had said to have felt. And to learn more about this symptom, see If you feel tired after this, you may have had COVID.
