Baylor Guard Jared butler received medical clearance from the NBA’s Fitness to Play panel, writes Shams Charania of The Athletic. Butler, this year’s Final Four’s most notable player, was seen as a possible pick midway through the first round when the draft process began, but was sidelined in June with heart disease.
Butler was not allowed to do anything on the pitch for the past three weeks, but he was still allowed to meet with teams and participate in off-pitch activities such as interviews and medical exams. He met this week with executives from the Kings, who hold the ninth and 39th picks in the draft.
“I am in great shape and authorized to play in the NBA! ” butler wrote on Twitter. “With great care, the NBA is incredibly thorough in examining the health of each player during the pre-draft process and throughout our careers. I am eternally grateful that their thorough and strict health analysis unanimously confirmed my suitability to play in the NBA. Now I am completely focused on the Draft and I am working daily to prepare myself to realize my lifelong dream !! ”
There are other draft news to pass on:
- Oregon Chris Duarte was satisfied with the results of Friday’s training for the Warriors, by James Crepea of The Oregonian. Duarte, who is expected to be selected around the middle of the first round, also visited the Wizards, Hornets, Thunder, Pelicans and Spurs. “It went well” Duarte said of Friday’s session. “I really like it, enjoying this time here.”
- Butler and Duarte may be possibilities for the Knicks if they retain the 19th and 21st picks, ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla tells Steve Serby of the New York Post. Fraschilla also mentions central Kentucky Isaiah Jackson and international perspective Usman Garuba.
- the RocketsThe interest in trading for the No.1 pick is legitimate, but they don’t have any really solid future draft picks to offer the Pistons, writes Athletic’s Zach Harper in his latest fictional draft. Harper expects Detroit to hang on to No.1 pick and take Cade Cunningham, leaving Houston to decide whether to keep choice # 2 or swap for additional assets. Jalen Green is the expected choice, but Harper cites “people in the Rockets’ decision-making process” who are in favor of the editorial staff. Suggestions from Jalen.
