Dragon Age 4 will be a single-player RPG as EA removes multiplayer functionality

BioWare and Electronic Arts’ upcoming Dragon Age game will be a single player experience, according to a report from Bloomberg. EA reportedly chose to remove multiplayer components from the role-playing game following a lukewarm response to BioWare’s co-op shooter Anthem and the better-than-expected sales of Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a single player game.

According to Bloomberg, the new Dragon Age was designed with a “heavy multiplayer component” in mind. This feature, or set of features, has since been removed from BioWare’s new project; rather than a live service game in the vein of Destiny or The Division, BioWare will develop a more traditional role-playing game.

Dragon Age: Inquisition, the newest game in the fantasy RPG franchise, had a co-op multiplayer component, but it was separate from the single player experience. Two of BioWare’s Mass Effect games also featured multiplayer components, but an upcoming remaster, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, will not include multiplayer.

Earlier this week, EA and BioWare announced that they were abandoning plans to substantially rework the game. Anthem. BioWare had said in early 2020 that it planned to review the mechanics of its co-op shooter, a project called Next hymn, but in an update released on Wednesday, the developer went back to those plans.

“In a spirit of transparency and closure, we wanted to share that we made the difficult decision to stop our new development work on Anthem (a.k.a Hymn NEXT), ”Said Christian Dailey, executive producer of BioWare, in a post on the BioWare blog. “However, we will continue to maintain the Anthem live service functioning as it currently exists. “

BioWare is currently working on a new game in the Mass Effect franchise alongside its new Dragon Age. EA offered a first look at Dragon Age 4 in December.
