Earlier this year on the 35th anniversary of Dragon Quest, Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest XII: Flames of Destiny.

The series creator previously mentioned that it was meant to be a much more “dark”, adult-themed version of the long-running JRPG series. In the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, Square Enix President and CEO Yosuke Matsuda discussed how this could potentially pave the way for the show’s leadership over the next 10-20 years:

Dragon Quest XII is being developed taking into account the next 10 to 20 years of Dragon Quest series … There are parts that remain consistent with the traditional image of Dragon Quest, but new elements are also needed. After all, as a brand, we always have to innovate.

When it comes to how the new Dragon Quest game will innovate, Yuji Horii previously mentioned how Command Battles would undergo some changes. While there is no release date or platform yet, we do know that the game will run on Unreal Engine 5 and is expected to be a simultaneous global release.
