Drew Barrymore weighs in on Lucy Liu and Bill Murray’s infamous explosion on the set of their 2000 film Charlie’s Angels.

During her eponymous talk show Tuesday, Barrymore shared memories of the making of the film, which she also produced, and the bond she shares with co-stars Liu and Cameron Diaz, who remain close friends. This led her to reveal how she contacted Liu in July after Liu confirmed the explosion in a Los Angeles Times maintenance.

“I made this whole video and sent it to her to save it and she said, ‘No, I don’t need it,'” Barrymore said of Liu.

Guest Danny Pellegrino asked what really happened during the disagreement and Barrymore said she would “spill the tea”.

“Bill was just in a – you know comedians can be a little dark sometimes – and he just got in a bad mood,” she explained. “What you need to know is how well Lucy stood up for herself. This is the great thing that came out of an unfortunate circumstance. She literally said, ‘I don’t accept that kind of behavior from your part. “And we all supported it and supported it and we moved forward.”

Pellegrino asked if Murray – who played Bosley for the angel trio Natalie (Diaz), Dylan (Barrymore) and Alex (Liu) – was just acting towards everyone or Liu in particular while this was going on. She said it was “general,” but then he “focused on” Liu.

Barrymore went on to say, “I have respected [Liu] so, I respect her now. I’m proud of us as a team and a company we don’t have on tiptoe. We fixed the problem on the spot, we were strong and we moved forward and we took no less to move forward. “

Barrymore agreed that Liu was an on-screen action hero in the film but a real-life superhero in the midst of the drama.

“She really was,” Barrymore said.

The story of Liu-Murray’s eruption on set has been circulating for years – but it was resurrected in July when Shaun O’Banion, who said he was a production assistant on the film, tweeted about what he would have seen go down. In short, he said Murray insulted Liu, calling her just a TV actress, in front of the cast and crew.

Liu broke his silence in the Pretty asian Podcast. The Ally McBeal alum said part of a scene was reworked, not by her, over a weekend, and Murray couldn’t be there for rehearsals. When it was time to shoot, “Bill started throwing insults, and I won’t go into detail, but it just went on and on. I was like,” Wow, he looks like me. look straight in the eye. ‘ I couldn’t believe that [the comments] could be towards me, because what do I have to do with anything …? I literally look around my shoulder, like, who is he talking to behind me? I say, ‘I’m so sorry. You’re talking to me?’ And clearly it was, because it started to become a one-to-one communication. “

She continued, “Some of the terms were inexcusable and unacceptable, and I wasn’t going to just sit there and take it. So, yeah, I stood up for myself and I don’t regret it. Because no matter how badly whatever. the totem pole whether you are or wherever you come from, there is no need to condescend or belittle others. And I wouldn’t back down, and I shouldn’t have. ”

Murray did not comment, but in 2009 he told the Times from London (via Weekly entertainment), “Look, I’ll fire you completely if you’re unprofessional and you work with me.… When our relationship is professional and you don’t get it, just forget about it.”
